Presidio Buildings 86 and 87
The Presidio, San Francisco
Renovation of Historic Army Barracks
Completed in 2006
This project entailed the renovation of two historic Army barracks. Built in 1862, these barracks were first occupied by the cavalry and may be the oldest buildings of this type West of the Rockies. Work entailed a full structural rehabilitation including a seismic upgrade, new foundation system, new building systems, complete exterior renovation, and accessibility improvements, including the addition of an elevator and entry structure between the two barracks. The historic fabric was retained including the old sash windows, which were painted brown. The building is now used as office space by a variety of small organizations.
